New parents to Receive Free Active Parent Passes to Greater Victoria Rec Centres

VICTORIA - New parents will be able to try drop-in fitness and health activities with a new pass good for five free admissions to any Greater Victoria (CRD) Recreation Centre.

The pass, which encourages new parents to be active and engaged in their communities in an effort to cope with the stress of new parenthood, gives new moms and dads access to swimming pools, weight room, aerobics and fitness classes.

The passes will only be distributed in the post-natal packages provided to new parents by Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA) public health nurses in the CRD area, either during their first home visits or as packages are delivered through the mail.

It is common for new parents to feel stressed, isolated, and sometimes even depressed - being active and eating well can help you overcome some of these feelings. Connecting with other parents can help to reduce feelings of isolation and help you to feel more supported.

The Active Parents Pass is one of a spectrum of programs offered under the regional Active Communities initiative. Active Communities is a cross-sectoral initiative focused on supporting communities to increase physical activity levels by 20% by 2010.

ActNow BC challenges individuals and communities to protect and improve their health by focusing on achievable goals such as physical activity and healthy eating.

This pass represents collaboration between the various municipal recreation departments of Greater Victoria, the YM/YWCA and the Vancouver Island Health Authority. Recreation Centres involved: Esquimalt, Oak Bay, City of Victoria, Saanich, Juan de Fuca, Panorama and SEAPARC (Sooke).
